The course is designed to introduce students to historically significant events in the Orthodox Church from the 9th to the 21st century. The course surveys all regions of the world Orthodox Christian presence, especially North America – the latter is the subject for the second section of the course. This course is designed to introduce students with major events and influential individuals in Orthodox Church worldwide and in North America. In North America, the Orthodox Church has been active since the end of the 18th century. Currently, the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) is an autocephalous national church in the United States. Its Canadian archdiocese has an official name Orthodox Church in Canada. Besides these national Orthodox churches, there are several other jurisdictions that represent canonical overseas based churches. This course will deal with the spread and evolution of Orthodoxy worldwide and in North America, its unique character, and important recent developments.
